The Green Build
Beyond the Build
On the Go? Text for Airport Info!
The airport has launched a SMS Text Alert program to keep you informed as construction
moves forward on the $1 billion Green Build project at Terminal 2. This makes it
as easy and hassle-free as possible to be in-the-know about the airport – delivering
short, quick updates straight to your mobile phone.
How does it work? Simply text ‘alert’ to 45995 and follow the prompts to
sign up to receive automatic text alerts. When changes are made that may impact
your trip to/from the airport, you will receive a short text message notification.
(Standard text messaging rates may apply.)
Airport visitors who need additional information can also:
- Text ‘park’ to 45995 to receive a list of airport parking lots and addresses, as
well as a click-to-call parking hotline.
- Text ‘terminals’ to 45995 and receive a link to a list of airlines that serve the
airport and the terminals where they are located.
Working Day and Night: Crews Complete Pedestrian Bridge Demolition
On May 21, 2010, engineers and construction crews for The Green Build Terminal 2
improvement project were tasked with removing the pedestrian bridge connecting Terminal
2 East with the parking lot at San Diego International Airport. The demolition made
way for construction of a new dual-level roadway in front of the terminal, which
will help relieve curbside congestion.
The Charge: Demolish the pedestrian bridge in the safest way possible and with minimal
disruption to the traveling public.
The Challenge: The bridge, made of concrete, extended over the Terminal 2
roadway, requiring a detour in order to keep airport visitors safe as crews took
down the bridge.
The Plan: The construction team planned for a detour around the pedestrian
bridge area that would last approximately 28 hours, from Friday night through Saturday,
typically the airport's slowest travel day. To help travelers, the team added signage
to the detour to direct traffic, staffed the detour with flaggers and posted signage
on Harbor Drive. The Airport Authority also alerted the public via a construction
e-alert, on its Facebook and Twitter pages, and via a media advisory.
The Result: The demolition of the Terminal 2 East pedestrian bridge was a
huge success. The construction team finished ahead of schedule, and the roadway
in front of Terminal 2 was reopened to traffic ahead of time on Saturday.
